Special prosecutor assigned to Hazard jail case

The Hazard Herald is reporting that a special prosecutor has been appointed to the case of two Perry County deputy jailers who are accused in the beating death of a Kentucky River Regional Jail inmate. Perry County Commonwealth Attorney John Hansen was expected to prosecute the case, but Hansen said he felt like there were some potential problems on appeal after seeing a witness list and realizing he had represented one of the witnesses. Hansen said he was advised to get out of the case as soon as possible. Assistant Attorney General Barbara Maines-Whaley was appointed as special prosecutor in the case. The trial of William C. Howell and Damon Hickman was continued until April 28th.
