Another Kentucky college will be looking for a new head football coach at the end of the season
November 21, 2012
Morehead State AD Brian Hutchinson has announced that head football coach Matt Ballard will not return next season as coach of the Eagles after 19 years as the schools head coach.
Hutchinson expressed gratitude for Ballard's efforts on behalf of the Morehead State program for more than two decades. Morehead posted an overall record of 102-105 under Ballard. The Eagles finished the 2012 season with a 4-7 record.
Hutchinson cited the program not performing up to expectations as a main reason for the change in leadership. A national search for Ballard's replacement is expected to begin immediately.

Morgan Co. football takes a hit from storms
March 26, 2012
We all know now of the awful damage tornadoes left in Morgan Co., but in rural America, another great community pride has been hit hard--the high school football program. Not much remains of Morgan Co.'s football equipment, field, or way of life.
This comes as a big blow to the Cougar program that was coming off one of the best seasons in the last three decades, including a home playoff game. However, standing on the debris-covered field, Coach Turner feels no joy, no excitement. Instead, it's replaced by dismay and heartbreak. All over the field pieces of wood, metal, and shards of glass are embedded in the ground. Coach Turner says it's likely they will have to remove the top 18 to 24 inches of the field to ensure all of the debris is removed. A large project, but it's necessary to ensure the safety of all athletes who would play on the only field in Morgan County. Coach Turner said he hasn't ruled out a complete clean up, but he knows there are much larger projects the school district has to take on like rebuilding the elementary and the central offices. The coach says he just keeps focusing on the goal ahead and keeping his student athletes on the track to success. If you'd like to help the Cougars get back on their feet, you can call the high school at (606) 743-8052.

UPike squeaks by Campbellsville
January 6, 2012
In a game whose largest lead was just six points--a game that was tied 11 times--a missed free throw tipped back in by Bears center Cordaro Ellis gave UPike the narrow lead they needed with 7 seconds on the clock to edge the Campbellsville Tigers 72-71.
Campbellsville ran it back, but the potentially game-winning 3-pointer bounced off the rim.
UPike junior Trevor Setty, who was shooting those final free throws that set up the explosive finish, led all scorers with 21 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals.
The Bears will be hosting St. Catharine College on Saturday.

Blackcats knock off Tigers 74-61 in overtime
December 12, 2011
The Prestonsburg Blackcats, coming off a stinging loss to Letcher County in their season opener, faced off with Paintsville on Tuesday. The two teams swapped the lead several times, but the Blackcats' grit overcame a deficit of 8 at the half to end regulation tied at 60 each.
They cranked up the heat in overtime, running 14-1 and deciding the game 74-61 to give Prestonsburg its first win of the season--and the first win for new coach James DeRossett.
Four Blackcats topped 10 points in the effort, led by Jarredd Jarrell's contribution of 18.
Paintsville will get second chance to topple Prestonsburg in the regular season finale, scheduled for February 17.

Hazard uses rushing game, turnovers to claim first state football championship
December 5, 2011
The Hazard Bulldogs now have something they've never had before: the class 1A state championship, and all the pride and bragging rights to go along with it. The 24-6 victory over the Mayfield Cardinals on Friday was thanks in no small part to quarterback Zack Blanton. A 28-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs a lead they never looked back from. The Hazard line combined for 144 rushing yards (to 26 for the Cardinals) and five interceptions.
The game was a night-and-day rematch of the 47-6 rout that gave Mayfield the title over Hazard in the 1A final just last year.
"I told them back home we was hungry," Blanton said. "Hard work, determination — that's what it gets you."

UPike/Mountain State basketball game turns into fistfight
November 17, 2011
What many thought would be a rematch of last season's NAIA national championship between UPike and Mountain State at the Expo Center turned into a brawl after a foul was called on Jamar Board. We're told that another player threw a basketball at Board after a foul was called and the benches cleared and punches were thrown. Mountain State's Head Coach Bob Bolen reportedly threw a punch at UPike Coach Kelly Wells. Both coaches and the player that threw the basketball were ejected from the game.

MSU defeats EKU, claims OVC volleyball title
November 2, 2011
Morehead State’s volleyball program accumulated more impressive numbers on their way to another OVC championship against hosts EKU. Led by impressive performances by freshmen Alex Fuelling and Colbey Cameron, junior Ellie Roberson, and redshirt Emma Keough, the Eagles toppled EKU for the 12th consecutive match between the two. The 2011 OVC title is now theirs, after a 20-6 season (15-1 in the OVC).
For the first three sets, EKU came out swinging, eking out substantial leads. They won the first nail-biter set 25-27, and looked poised to repeat in the second, but the Eagles rallied to win it 25-22. In the third, MSU again overcame an EKU advantage to win 25-20, and dominated the fourth 25-16 despite a late charge by EKU.
They hope to parlay the momentum from the 3-1 win into similar efforts this weekend, starting against Southeast Missouri at 7 p.m. Friday.

Cards roll over Bears 74-55
October 27, 2011
The UPike Bears fought tooth and nail, but ultimately came up short against U of L in the season-opening exhibition at KFC Yum! Center. Louisville hit a disappointing 41.2% overall, but it was enough to trump the Bears, who struggled all night and hit only 29.2%. The Cardinals took a commanding 16-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, though the Bears cut it down to as little as six. In the second, that lead was never less than 11 points, and the final score: 74-55.
The Cardinals’ regular season begins with a Nov. 11 home game against Tennessee-Martin, and UPike’s kicks off at home Saturday against Union College.
