After 30 years of operation a Magoffin County manufacturer will close its doors permanently. In an official statement Joy Global announced that it will be closing down operations at its Salyersville location, and laying off 69 workers. Joy Global, which is a mining manufacturing plant, knew of the impending closure and warned city officials ahead of time. Magoffin County already has more than doubled the state averaged unemployment rate, with almost 13 percent of their workforce unemployed. County officials hope that the completion of the new Magoffin County industrial park and the mountain parkway expansion will end their unemployment woes. The plant will shutter its operations on the 13^th, and employees will receive paychecks through December 28^th.
