A woman died Tuesday night from injuries she sustained in a fire early Sunday morning in Pulaski County. It happened at a home in Nancy off Kentucky 80.

Fire crews tell us everyone got out of the home safely when Roxann North rushed back in, believing her grandchildren were still inside. That is when her nightgown caught on fire and she was badly burned.

She was taken to a Louisville hospital. Her family said she died from her injuries Tuesday afternoon.

“She was definitely a hero. She was a hero when she was here. She was always trying to help people. Always talking about Jesus, trying to be the best person,” said Britney Jones, North’s daughter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the assistant chief says they believe it was an accident.

The fire likely started in the kitchen. A man who was inside the house at the time said he heard popping sounds as the fire started.

“Smoke was so bad,” said Christ North, Roxann’s husband. “I about collapsed at the window. My wife was hysterical. She ran back in the house. Trying to go from room to room to find the kids.”

“It makes you feel comfort, knowing that she wanted to make sure they were okay. She put her life on the line for them,” said Jones.

The home was destroyed because of the fire, smoke and water damage. The family said this is an incredible loss for them this close to the holiday season.

“She would want someone else to be happy before herself. A very caring person,” Jones remembered. “Someone need something, I could see her trying to get all her friends together to get clothes for the girls.”

Southern Oaks Funeral Home in Somerset is handling arrangements for the family. The visitation will be at 2 p.m. and the memorial service at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Donations in Roxann’s name can be made at the Southern Oaks Memorial Fund.
