After his son died, a Pike County man’s felony assault charge was upgraded to murder. He was accused of shooting his son multiple times in a recent domestic dispute.

Pike District Judge Robert Wright granted a motion submitted by Assistant Pike County Attorney Adam Hall on April 7 to upgrade Larry Harris, 61, of Abner Fork Road, from a first-degree assault charge to a murder charge following the death of his son, David Wayne Harris, 38.

During the hearing, Kentucky State Police Det. Tony Tackett, the investigating officer, testified that David Harris died on March 31 from the wounds he sustained in the March 30 incident.

According to court filings, the incident took place after Larry Harris and David Harris had been drinking together.

Larry Harris informed authorities that David Harris began arguing with him, at which point Larry Harris admitted to shooting at David Harris numerous times, including as his son was attempting to flee. Larry Harris shot his son about six times, according to Scott’s affidavit, and David Harris was bleeding from his head and body when authorities arrived. Larry Harris told authorities he was “tired of being beat and cussed at,” according to the affidavit. Larry Harris admitted to using a.22 caliber revolver.

Harris was returned to the Pike County Detention Center after the April 7 hearing, where he had been detained since his March 30 arrest. Larry Harris’ bond will stay at $10,000 cash.
