A trial date has now been set for a Paintsville Doctor who has pleaded not guilty to federal drug and fraud charges.

Dr. Loey Kousa was indicted last month on charges of unlawfully distributing controlled substances, health care fraud, and making false statements on medical records. He had been operating out of the East Kentucky Clinic. Dr. Kousa also stands accused of prescribing opioids to patients who had no medical need for them in addition to requiring unnecessary tests that were billed to Medicare, Medicaid, or insurance.

On Monday, a judge denied the request from prosecution that Dr. Kousa’s travel be restricted to the Eastern District of Kentucky in addition to his not being allowed to speak with patients, employees, or witnesses. The judge did ban him from prescribing any controlled substances or discussing the case with potential witnesses.
