A southwestern Virginia man is now behind bars on a long list of charges after allegedly leading police on a chase.

A roadblock was being conducted at the intersection of US 460 and Marrowbone Creek at around 11:00 PM Friday night. Officers checked on 26-year-old James Douglas Allen Adkins, of Vansant, who was said to be in a side-by-side. Officers allegedly smelled alcohol as they approached Adkins’ vehicle, who then drove away.

Police began to follow in an attempt to pull Adkins over. According to officials, Adkins drove on the wrong side of the road, reaching speeds of up to 75 mph all while forcing other vehicles off of the road to avoid colliding with him. He is said to have also passed vehicles in blind curves.

At a point, Adkins collided with a police cruiser, causing his vehicle to crash in a ditch. According to officials, Adkins began to run as they approached his vehicle. Officers used a taser before making the arrest.

Adkins was arrested and charged with fleeing police, DUI, wanton endangerment, and a dozen more charges.
