Warfield, Ky – Four adults were arrested and one woman cited after a fight in the parking lot of Warfield Elementary School Monday, prompting a soft lockdown at the school. Officers with the Martin County Schools Police Department say the fight started after an earlier altercation at the McDonald’s in Inez. Caleb and Tony Costa and Gage and Ronald Reed are all charged with second-degree disorderly conduct. Police say no students or staff were hurt, and classes later resumed as normal.
Perry County, Ky – Perry County Sheriff Joe Engle has released more details about a deadly ATV crash in Vicco. He says two juvenile girls and two adult men were riding near Oakwood Avenue around nine o’clock Saturday night when the girl driving lost control and went over an embankment. A juvenile passenger was killed, and an adult male passenger was flown to a trauma center with serious injuries. Engle says alcohol is suspected, the young driver is charged with DUI, and investigators are working to learn how the alcohol was obtained. Perry County Central High School says the victim was a student there and that counselors will be available for students and staff.
Prestonsburg, Ky – A Prestonsburg man and woman are facing drug and child endangerment charges after police say they found them intoxicated around small children during a welfare check. Officers with Prestonsburg Police and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office say they went to an apartment on Cliffside Circle for a possible domestic situation and heard several children crying inside. After the door opened, officers reported a strong odor of marijuana and said Michael and Hannah Blanton appeared intoxicated. Drug paraphernalia and unprescribed medication were found within reach of the children, and the case remains under investigation.
Prestonsburg, Ky – The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved a rate increase for Kentucky Power, raising the average customer’s bill by 6.63 percent over two years. The PSC says a typical residential customer using 1,208 kilowatt hours a month will see their bill go from about 183 dollars and 37 cents to about 194 dollars and 13 cents. The increase is staggered, with a 5.87 percent hike in the first year and another 0.76 percent after that, along with a new two‑tier rate design and an independent management audit of Kentucky Power
