Today (Wednesday, June 24th, 2015), a law passed by this year’s Kentucky General Assembly takes effect after years of effort by advocates who say it will save the lives of children. The new law requires kids to ride in booster seats until they are 57 inches tall or eight years old. Kosair Children’s Hospital advocate Sharon Rengers advocated for the law for several sessions and says it brings Kentucky in line with most other states and the thinking of child transportation safety experts, ending confusion on when kids are big enough to ride without a booster seat. Kentucky’s previous law was at 50 inches, which is too small for children to be adequately in a seat by themselves. This previous standard was not big enough to protect kids from seat belt internal injuries in the event of a crash. Once again, this new law goes into effect TODAY!
