A point of national contention is being played out in an Eastern Kentucky Community

A point of national contention is being played out in an Eastern Kentucky Community. In 1972 students from the four schools that would be consolidated into Allen Central High School voted to make their mascot the Rebels. Since then the battle flag has been incorporated into everyday life at the school. In light of recent national trends, the board of education asked the school to take the flag down, but a group of Alumni want to see the flag raised. John Ison of Martin is one of the individuals who spoke out about it at a meeting, and he is simply asking for two more years.

Floyd County Superintendent Dr. Henry Webb addressed the concerned Alumni in a letter, stating that he appreciated their input, but the county would not deviate from their course of action. In an interview Webb said that the removal does not affect the individual. Regina Ison, of Martin, was among the activist. She sees the flag as a point of pride and heritage. Mrs. Ison said she understands Webb’s point, but believes that there should be more interaction between the board and the student body over the issue.
