There have been efforts to create homeless shelters before in Prestonsburg, last august the Saint James Episcopal church opened a multi-bed shelter which closed due to lack of funding. Now a group of locals are working towards creating a standalone shelter, which would not be dependent on a religious or government body to maintain its funding. The group has been approached by many in the community who are anxious to help, and are still working on a strategy. They will have an open meeting on October the 19th at the St. James Episcopal Church at 7pm, and are encouraging the public to come out and help with the planning.
