Davis says licenses are legitimate and religious leaders travel to Frankfort

The controversy attached to Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, and the marriage licenses that her office issued may have been put to bed by her legal team. In a public statement Davis told reporters that she would not attach her name to the documents, since she considered it a violation of her religious beliefs. Originally Davis cast doubt about the viability of the documents since they do not bear her name, but yesterday her legal team conceded that since they are recognized by the Governor and Attorney General, they are legitimate.

In related news a fellowship of religious leaders spoke with Governor Steve Beshear’s office about enacting an exemption for clerks like Davis. Beshear’s chief of Staff, Larry Bonds met the group and informed them that the Governor does not have the power to strip a county official of a responsibility that the legislature has granted them, and that he considered a special session a waste of tax dollars since the next executive session is only 12 weeks away. According to Beshear a special session of the legislature would cost the tax payers 60-thousand dollars a day.
