On September 1st the historic Grand Hotel Building in Hazard caught fire, destroying businesses and displacing dozens of residents. Now the City of Hazard has given the building’s owner, Brian Carter, a deadline to submit a plan stating what he intends to do with the structure. The plan must include ways to dispose of hazardous materials, and live up to the standards of the state division of air quality. Carter claims he has submitted plans to the city council, and has expressed frustration with the city for imposing this deadline. He has entertained the idea of building the Grand Hotel back up since he believes that losing the building would be a terrible tragedy for the community.
