A county going through a financial crisis is making a tough decision on their animal shelter. Martin County recently made the news for their financial crisis in the wake of declining coal severance funds. After a failed attempt to raise property taxes in the county, the court has been looking for other ways to stop to fiscal free fall. One service they are considering for removal is the animal shelter. The shelter has had its own issues recently with overcrowding; it was only designed to house 8 animals and is now stuffed with 40. In a WYMT article County officials say they may have to “cut back to what the KRS requires them to do”, which says animals in the county could be moved to another facility, adopted, or put down. Officials have not taken any action yet, but the issue is expected to be covered at the next court meeting.
