U.S. Senate voted down expanded background checks for firearm purchases

The proposed expansion would close loopholes in the current law that only requires background checks for transactions at licensed dealers, but not purchases made online or at gun shows. The bipartisan legislation was authored by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania, and was brought up in the wake of the California shooting that left 14 people dead. The measure was defeated in a 50-47 vote.
