On Friday Martin County’s Emergency Management Director Lee Gauze reported a mining slurry spill from the Revelation Energy operation into Wolf Creek. In a statement to WYMT Gauze said these spills happen frequently, often twice a year. Slurry is what remains after coal is cleaned and can contain several toxins such as Mercury. Martin County was the site of one of the largest slurry spills in history when the embankment broke at a Massey Slurry pond, dumping 306 million gallons of Sludge into the water table. While Gauze says this recent spill should not impact the drinking water, residents are understandably worried.
