Bevin announces broad spending cuts in his first State of the Commonwealth Address

Governor Matt Bevin addressed members of the state legislature yesterday and repeated his promise to make broad cuts to the state budget. His first point was to instate a 4.5 percent, or 117-million dollar, cut to the budget through executive action. There will be progressive cuts over the next two years, eventually leading to a 9 percent cut by 2017. Some sectors will not feel the pinch, since he promised to avoid cuts to K-12 education, veteran programs, and low income medical insurance. Some state agencies, including the Kentucky State Police and corrections will see an increase in their budget.
