A local health department is pushing for a needle exchange

The Ashland-Boyd Health Department is trying to establish a needle-exchange program for their coverage area. In a statement to the Ashland Independent Boyd County Coroner Mark Hammond said that Hepatitis C deaths made a dramatic rise in 2011 and 2012. According to officials, individuals sharing dirty needles have led to the sudden expansion. Advocates hope the exchange will stem the spread of the disease, while also giving the department an opportunity to educate addicts. Before the program can launch, the department must receive approval from the board of health and local government.
