New legislation could give the coalfields a leg up

The bi-partisan bill would release 1-billion dollars from the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Fund to former Coal Communities. Under the plan, 200-million dollars will be distributed to Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Pennsylvania annually for 5 years. Then the state governments can distribute those funds into local projects. In a statement, Reprehensive Hal Rogers mentioned that the Commonwealth has lost more than 11-thousand coal jobs since 2009, but said that this legislation could give Appalachian communities the ability to get their people back to work.
