Unemployment Rates Drop in 93 Kentucky Counties

Unemployment rates fell in 93 Kentucky counties between July 2015 and July 2016, but rose in 27 counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training. The lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth was Oldham County at 3.5 percent. Rates were consistent between 3.5 and 4.5 in the central Kentucky region, while counties in eastern Kentucky had higher unemployment rates, with Magoffin County having the highest in the state at 16.3 percent. Other counties in our listening area, such as Floyd, Pike and Lawrence, had unemployment rates over 10 percent. To compare, the state’s overall unemployment rate was 5.2 percent for July 2016 and 5.1 percent for the nation.
