Eastern Kentucky Labor Force Analysis Results

The results of a study on Eastern Kentucky’s workforce have been released. A summary of the EKY Works Workforce Analysis was provided by WYMT with recommendations on how to improve area job growth and information about workers surveyed. Since 2006, the labor force has declined by 20 percent for the region, with employment declining 21 percent. While having a strong work ethic and loyalty to employers, many workers, particularly those from the coal industry, had lost confidence in their value to employers and challenged to discuss their skills. Recommendations for increasing job growth included encouragement of entrepreneurship, government contracts, and new skills training. Fast-tracking credential training programs were also suggested as a way to use current skills in other industries.
