Representative Chuck Tackett announced Thursday that he was pre-filing a bill that, if passed and ratified, would amend the Kentucky Constitution to include tax exemptions for property owned by posts or organizations of past or present members of the Armed Forces of the United States. Tackett said he was bothered by “fairly ambiguous language…knocking groups like the American Legion and VFW out of receiving a tax exempt status in Kentucky.” The proposed amendment mirrors the federal Internal Revenue Code, which exempts groups such as American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts from federal income tax. The proposed legislation would mean a federal income tax exempt organization would be exempt from state and local tax. If the bill passes the Kentucky General Assembly during the 2017 Regular Session, the people of Kentucky would vote on the amendment in November 2018.
