Summit Held for SAFE Kit Backlog

Attorney General Andy Beshear held a summit in Frankfort yesterday to support individuals working to end Kentucky’s sexual assault forensic exam kit backlog. The Office of the Attorney General and the Sexual Assault Response Team Advisory Committee convened the SAFE Summit ahead of the results from the more than 3,000 backlogged kits returning in the coming days. Nearly 200 law enforcement officers, prosecutors and victim advocates across the state received specialized training on how to conduct a victim-centered investigation, examine cold cases, notify victims and prosecute sexual assault offenders. Beshear said one of his proudest moments was transferring $4.5 million to the Kentucky Police crime lab to ensure this backlog never happens again.
