A Whitesburg community leader has called out Senator Mitch McConnell to support the RECLAIM Act. WYMT reports Eric Dixon, Coordinator of Police and Community Engagement at Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center, wrote an article in the Lexington-Herald challenging McConnell’s stance on the bill. The RECLAIM Act amends the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 to make specified funds available to the Department of the Interior “to promote economic revitalization, diversification, and development in economically distressed communities through reclamation of land and water resources adversely affected by coal.” McConnell’s representatives said the senator supports “economic development and job training for coal country” but also believes no amount of federal relief will fix the damage already done.
