Floyd County health officials are looking to halt the spread of diseases related to drug users sharing needles, reports WYMT. The county will soon be offering a needle exchange program, which officials said is being done to stop the spread of Hepatitis C and HIV. For some, like recovering addict Clinton Thomas, the program is believed to be started too late. Thomas said 80-percent of the people he knows has Hep C and he himself contracted the disease last year. Thursa Sloan, public health director for the Floyd County Health Department, is hopeful the program will stop users from sharing needles. They plan to give users 40 syringes on the first visit without syringes, and then exchange dirty needles for clean ones after. Officials said the exchanges will be confidential and information to help people stop using will also be offered.
