Hazard Officials Explain Hydrant Issue

Following up on a story about a house fire in Perry County Tuesday, WYMT contacted Hazard officials to find out why a hydrant near the home was turned off. The hydrant used by the Viper Volunteer Fire Department near the home of Freddie Childers was said to not be a fire hydrant but a flushing hydrant, which is used to flush debris and does not have enough pressure to fight a fire. Hazard Mayor Jimmy Lindon said those hydrants are turned off due to users turning the valves on in the past and letting the water run. The mayor will be meeting with chief of the Viper Volunteer Fire Department to discuss installing fire hydrants in the area in hopes of fixing the issue.
