Moana Costume Pulled by Disney

If your child was looking for a costume from the upcoming Disney film Moana, they may be disappointed. A costume of the character Maui, a Polynesian Demigod voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, from the animated feature has been pulled from both Disney’s online and brick and mortar stores. The costume has been called “racist” for having the dark skin and tattoos of the character and was referred to as “cultural appropriation.” One Twitter user compared it to the skin suit from “Silence of the Lambs”. Disney apologized in a statement, saying they “took great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands” and “regret the Maui costume has offended some.”
