Social Worker Told Not to Make Unauthorized Comments to Media

If you are a social worker in Kentucky, you could be facing disciplinary action by talking to the news media. The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services sent an email to all employees last week warning them of the consequences of unauthorized comments made to the news media, which could include dismissal. The message comes after several news stories of social workers investigating child abuse expressing their frustration at being overworked and under-staffed. Some called the email “demoralizing,” while Jean West, communications director for the cabinet, said the email from human resources served as a policy reminder and they should not feel singled out. Tim Feeley, deputy secretary of the cabinet, said he wants any issues to be fixed “in-hour and not have everyone go to the press.”
