U.S. Representative John Yarmuth has requested Governor Matt Bevin to withdraw his proposal to overhaul Kentucky’s Medicaid program after saying the federal government would not approve it. The congressman from Louisville said Bevin’s plan would cause over 80,000 people to lose their insurance as well as charge them monthly premiums. Press Secretary Amanda Stamper released a statement saying Yarmuth was “playing politics,” and that “Governor Bevin and his team have spent several months developing a transformative and financially sustainable Medicaid plan that will actually improve health outcomes for Kentuckians and encourage self-sufficiency. Governor Bevin remains committed to working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as long as it takes to transform Kentucky’s Medicaid program to achieve these vital goals.” While Yarmuth believes the waiver will be rejected as HHS has done to similar plans from other states, Stamper said the department has the ability to approve the Kentucky HEALTH waiver requiring able bodied recipients of Medicaid to participate in some form of community engagement, through volunteer work or employment.
