KSP Warns Motorists of Increased Deer Activity

Kentucky State Police are warning drivers of the hazards of deer activity this fall. KSP Lt. Michael Webb said “Deer mating season leads to higher activity all across the Commonwealth, which leads to more car-deer crashes.” Deer collision can result in extensive vehicle damage, as well as human injury. In 2015, three people were killed and 163 injured after hitting a deer. KSP offered tips for motorists to reduce their chances of hitting a deer:

  • Be extra cautious in the early morning and evening hours as deer are most active during these low-light periods.
  • Stay alert when driving through a deer-crossing zone.
  • Drive at a moderate speed.
  • Use high beam headlights if there is no on-coming traffic as it will reflect in the eyes of deer on or near the roadway.
  • Slow down when seeing a deer, do not swerve as it may confuse the deer and you may hit a tree or other car.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
