The Boyd County Detention Center is under investigation by the United State Department of Justice under the Civil Rights of Incarcerated Persons Act. The DOJ will be focusing on whether prisoners are adequately protected from the use of excessive force, are subject to invasions of their bodily privacy, and whether the jail indiscriminately uses restrictive housing without due process. According to a press release from the Boyd County Detention Center, they were inspected this spring with a 98% compliance rating with Kentucky Jail Standards, but falling short in categories of overcrowding by having 215 inmates in a 206 bed facility. They said they are confident the DOJ will conclude they are compliant with federal law and are prepared to make any necessary corrections.
