On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Hal Rogers released a statement in conjunction with the release of the 21st Century Cures Act. The legislation includes $4.8 billion in discretionary funding for the National Institutes of Health, $1 billion for state grants to fight opioid abuse, and $500 million to the Food and Drug Administration to fast-track critical medications and devices to market. In the statement, Rogers said the act would “move our country’s medical research forward” and continue innovation by speeding up the approval process for medical therapies and devices. He added that he is committed to working with his colleagues in the House and Senate to follow through on the funding to make the legislation a reality, applauding Chairmen Upton and Alexander for finalizing the landmark legislation.
