Missing Person Investigation Leads to Arrest for Murder Plot

On December 22, 2016, KSP Post 10 Harlan received a call about an individual missing from the LeJunior community of Harlan County. Master Trooper Michael Cornett began a missing person’s investigation on 58-year-old Hershel Starret. Throughout the investigation, detectives determined Hershel’s wife, Melissa Starret, 47, and cousin, James Starret, 42, had attempted to buy a gun with the intention of injuring or killing him. Melissa and James Starret were charged with complicity to commit murder and receiving stolen property. Police said Hershel’s disappearance is unrelated at this time.
