On Sunday, January 8, around 2pm, Kentucky State Police Post 8 in Morehead received a call to assist the Rowan County Sheriff Department on a welfare check at 1090 Island Fork Road in Morehead. Rowan County Sheriff’s Deputies and Morehead Police Officers originally made contact with an unidentified male subject. The male subject retreated into the residence, barricading himself inside. The subject then fired multiple rounds at officers, striking a Rowan County Deputy. Officers returned fire while recovering the deputy,  after which the residence became engulfed in flames. Two women and the male gunman are reportedly dead. Kentucky State Police are currently investigating and more information will be released when available.
