BSCTC and City of Pikeville Join for Unity March, Prestonsburg Campus Holds Tribute to MLK

Big Sandy Community and Technical College and the city of Pikeville held a Unity March commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 16 at the Pikeville City Park. Former Kentucky Governor Paul Patton and Pastor Billy Compton reflected on the life of the late Reverend Gene Layne, who work to bridge the racial divide in eastern Kentucky. Pastor Justin Preston recited King’s “I have a dream” speech. In the keynote address, Herbert Owens said we can’t continue to shackle our youth with our mistakes and we must believe in the power of dreams to bring about change. Dr. Tom Matijasic, history professor at BSCTC, spoke on Dr. King’s life and legacy during a tribute on the Prestonsburg campus January 17.
