Around 3am January 18, 2017 Lieutenant Wilson Jones arrested 38-year-old Kenneth Gay of Hazard as he was attempting to steal two rolls of copper from the American Electric Power facility on East Main Street in Lothair. AEP employees had noticed their perimeter fence had been cut, with small amounts of copper being stolen. Jones was off-duty at the time, contracted by AEP to provide security services. Gay was spotted on security cameras and when approached he was found with two rolls of copper over his arm. He admitted to cutting the fence and when searched had brass knuckles and a Leatherman tool. Gay was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing, possession of burglary tools, carrying concealed deadly weapon, and theft by unlawful taking. He was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
