The Ashland Police Department is warning of a phone scam with a person with a foreign accent claiming to be from the IRS, demanding money. The Ashland PD received calls concerning the scam. The scam has targeted taxpayers and recent immigrants throughout the country, with the scammers using fake names and IRS identification badge numbers, altering the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. Victims are told they owe money, to be paid by wire transfer or pre-paid debit card. If the phone isn’t answered, they will leave a message with an urgent callback request. The IRS reminds citizens to report any scams to 1-800-366-4484.
