Key Administration Officials Support Charter Schools in Kentucky

The chair of the House Education Committee has filed a bill to allow charter schools in Kentucky and has picked up support from two influential administration officials. Governor Matt Bevin and Education and Workforce Development Cabinet Secretary Hal Heiner endorse House Education Committee Chair John Carney’s Bill, which Carney says finds the center of previous charter schools proposals. Bevin says he wants students who struggle in traditional schools to succeed. Under the bill, local school boards would grant charters with an appeal to the Kentucky Board of Education available. Charter schools would be public schools and have to meet all current accountability standards. Those seeking charters would have to demonstrate how their schools would meet the challenges of the students they would serve.
