Solar Energy Subsidies Costing Customers

Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are issuing a call to action to their members in support of a bill to end what they say are unfair subsidies for customers with solar panels. Current state law on solar energy and electric rates creates an unfair subsidy for those with solar panels at the cost of those without, according to Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives President Chris Perry. Perry says given the expense of installing solar panels, it means those with solar panels are getting a break at the expense of those with more modest means. Senate Bill 214, which awaits a committee hearing, would remedy that and potentially expand the use of solar power in a responsible way by significantly increasing the limits on how much those with solar panels can generate. Perry is calling on coop members to call their state senators to voice support for the bill.
