Opposition to House Bill 520 Allowing Charter Schools

After last week’s passage of a bill allowing public charter schools in Kentucky, the measure moves to the state senate as the 2017 Kentucky General Assembly winds down. And education advocates opposed to House Bill 520 are taking their fight to that chamber. The House-passed bill allows an unlimited number of school charters, opening the door for national organizations and for-profit businesses to run schools in the state. Trish Smith, a mother of two, is among education advocates questioning the bill and disagrees with claims that the bill is what’s best for students. Smith says charter schools would take away public money from underfunded public schools with no good evidence they would improve education. She wants lawmakers to delay action this session to allow more study rather than rushing through a bill that she says is not fully understood.
