Ashland Cardiologist Granted New Trial

An Ashland doctor convicted of performing unnecessary heart procedures has been granted a new trial. Dr. Richard E. Paulus was convicted in October 2016 for fraudulently billing Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers for invasive heart procedures that were medically unnecessary between 2008 and 2013. Judge David L. Bunning granted the new trial for Paulus, writing in his ruling that there was not enough evidence presented at his previous trial to constitute proof or disproof of false diagnoses. Dr. Paulus was originally set to be sentenced in April.
