At 1:39pm on Sunday, March 19, 2017, Kentucky State Police Post 8 Morehead received multiple 911 calls regarding a one vehicle accident on I-64 near the 118 mile marker in Bath County. Upon further investigation, it was determined Kenneth Shoptaw, 39, of Inez, was traveling eastbound on the interstate when he crossed into the median, entering the westbound lane, over-correcting, and overturning his vehicle several times. Shoptaw and his passenger, Sherry Bowen, 31, of Warfield, were extracted from the vehicle by the Bath County Fire Department and EMS. Shoptaw was flown to UK Medical Center, listed in critical condition, and Bowen was transported to St. Joe’s Medical Center in Mt. Sterling where she was released after refusing medical treatment.
