Laila Rani Slone Varia Fund to Provide Floyd County Students with Free Admission to Science Center

The East Kentucky Science Center hosted a special announcement on March 28, in the Dr. Mahendra Varia Planetarium. 7th and 8th grade students from Betsy Layne Elementary as well as students with the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps and David School were in attendance. The announcement open with The Star Spangled Banner performed by Ally Davis. Sheel Slone, granddaughter of Drs. Mahendra and Chandra Varia, spoke about her family’s dedication to education in the region before presenting a donation of over $15,000 in her daughter’s name, Laila Rani Slone Varia, to provide free admission to the science center for Floyd county elementary and middle school students, as well as students with Job Corps and the David School. Dr. Chandra Varia also spoke and thanked everyone for coming and encouraged the students to follow their dreams.
