A former supervisory deputy jailer at an Eastern Kentucky detention center has been convicted by a jury of federal charges related to his role in an unprovoked violent assault of a detainee. The jury convicted 32-year-old Kevin Asher of deprivation of civil rights under color of law, and obstruction of justice. Asher and deputy jailer Damon Hickman allegedly beat inmate Gary Hill, 55, after he ran the faucet in his cell, at Kentucky River Regional Jail, until water spilt out onto the floor. Hill died from his injuries and evidence established the deputies failed to obtain medical treatment for him. Asher also filled out an incident report falsely claiming Hill slipped and fell onto the floor and no physical force was used against him. Asher is scheduled for sentencing in August, facing up to 10 years for the assault and up to 20 years for obstruction.
