A single vehicle crash involving a school bus sent several students and bus driver to the hospital the morning of Monday, April 24, in Perry County. The crash occurred around 8am on Kentucky Highway 28, in the Gay’s Creek community, near Buckhorn. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 responded to the scene along with emergency personnel. The preliminary investigation in this collision determined the school bus was traveling eastbound on HWY 28 when it left the roadway and collided with a tree. The driver of the bus, 61 year old Pam Couch, advised investigators she had swerved to avoid a deer that ran onto the roadway when she lost control and ran over an embankment. Couch and 13 student passengers were transported to Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. No criminal charges are pending at this time and the collision remains under investigation.
