The Louisa Police Department is starting a volunteer youth police explorer program and is now accepting applications. Being an explorer gives someone a chance to see firsthand if they want to pursue a career in criminal justice. Explorers will ride with officers, participate in some training, learn criminal laws, assist in parade or other traffic details, learn how to prepare reports, and various other law enforcement duties. Basic requirements include: being a resident of Lawrence County; be age 14 to 19 and a student at Lawrence County High School or be 18 to 21 and enrolled as a full time college student in Kentucky; no criminal offenses; sponsored by a Lawrence County Certified peace officer; and maintain a gpa of 2.8 or above for high school or 2.5 for college students.
