A single vehicle crash occurred in Breathitt County the morning of Thursday, December 21, 2017, resulting in the death of a Jackson girl. Kentucky State Police Post 13 Trooper Steve Thomas responded to the scene at War Shoal Branch, after dispatchers received a 911 call advising of a 12-year-old female not breathing. Arrow-Med Ambulance also responded to the scene and transported two individuals to Kentucky River Medical Center for medical treatment. It was later determined that Mark Robertson and his 12-year-old daughter had been traveling westbound on War Shoal Branch when he lost control of the vehicle and it traveled over an embankment. The car overturned several times, causing the passenger to be ejected. The daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Robertson was later transported to UK Medical Center. While impairment was not apparent in this incident, a toxicology sample was submitted by the driver, which is standard in fatal collision investigations. No seatbelts were in use at the time of collision.
