On Thursday, January 25, 2018, the Perry County Sheriff Department received a call of some horse not being properly cared for at 1209 Walker Branch RD in Hazard. Sergeant Ruey Couch along with Tom Caudill from the animal shelter responded to the scene. Several horses were found at the location in poor living conditions. The barns were reported uncared for, with no food left for the horses. Two of the horses appeared to be in poor health. The owner of the horses, Danny Johnson, was charged with cruelty to animals. The horses were taken to the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter in Hazard.
