The Kentucky Department of Public Health is reporting a case of measles in the Barren River District. The case was reportedly contracted by an unvaccinated child who recently traveled out of the country to an area where measles is an epidemic. The case is not linked to an ongoing measles outbreak in the state of Washington or other cases of measles in the U.S. DPH, the Barren River District Health Department, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are collaborating in the investigation and have confirmed the child did not become infectious until returning to Kentucky. Public exposure is believed to be very limited. DPH Commissioner Dr. Jeff Howard said they cannot stress enough the importance of vaccination. He added that measles, among many other vaccine-preventable diseases, is an extremely dangerous illness, especially for small children.
