Five in Eastern Kentucky have been charged in connection to health care fraud and controlled substance schemes, including three doctors, a dentist, and an office staff member. The arrests occurred on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 and included Dr. Mohammed Mazumder of Prestonsburg, who allegedly provided pre-signed prescriptions for his office staff to prescribe while he was out of his office; Sai Gutti, MD, of Pikeville, was charged with billing for unnecessary urine tests; Scott Akers, MD, charged with prescribing opioids in exchange for cash and prescribing them for people who sent messenger requests to his office manager, Serissa Stamper; and dentist Denver Tackett of McDowell, charged with prescribing opioids that had no legitimate medical purpose and removing teeth unnecessarily. Charges and arrests were made as part of a takedown by the Appalachian Regional Prescription Opioid Strike Force.
